Penstemons rooted in water

Good afternoon, is it time to pot on these penstemon cuttings or should I be patient and keep them in water for a bit longer?

Those with roots longer than 1-2" should be potted up in some gritty compost and left somewhere sheltered for 2-3 weeks so they can start growing suitable roots for the ground.

    They look great!!

PS - there's a lot of top growth - I'd shorten the tops a bit so that you get strong bushy plants.
That would also reduce the amount of leaves thereby reducing the amount of water they'll need whist settling in to a completely different growing medium - which will give healthier plants

  • Thank you. Will pot on the more rooted ones this afternoon. Very excited about them.

So in between rain showers I’ve potted up the ones with the longest roots and now back inside hiding from the rain.  Should I take off the larger leaves only or actually cut some of the stem off to get bushier growth?

Yes, just trim off some of the bigger leaves on the smaller one.
The ones with longer stems - I'd cut off most of the top growth and let the lower side shoots develop or you'll end up with unbalanced plants. If you leave 3-4 nodes on the bottom of the stem that should give a good bushy plant.
Then you may well be able to root the bits you cut off :)
