First time raspberry grower needs help!
in Fruit & veg
Hello there, I am making my first attempt to grow raspberries and tayberries this year and am having some challenges with some of the canes. I've attached some photos below. Long story short, some seem to be doing really well, others not at all. The close up shots are of the problem cane (you can see the successful ones behind - on the left a tayberry on the right a raspberry). It started to sprout but then the leaves withered and it has stopped progressing. Any ideas why and what I can do to save it?

I had a similar experience when I planted raspberries years ago.
Out of 18 canes of 3 different varieties that I planted in the autumn only a couple seemed OK the following Spring and they looked similar to yours.
There was no growth whatsoever from the rest of the canes.
It turned out that the canes were concentrating on growing a substantial root system before putting any effort into the top growth.
A year later I had a thicket of raspberry canes growing all over the place.
Hopefully yours are just taking the same route.

Thanks for getting back to me.
Fingers crossed that will be it! Just so strange it started sending shoots out then they just withered and died. Fingers crossed I'll get fruit from the other 2 at least.
All the best!
have you given them plenty of water this spring? In many areas the soil below the surface is quite dry this year.

We had no rain at all in Feb, but plenty sine then and it's still really dry a few inches down.

My soil is in good condition, but we don't have the same problem here with rainfall. I still check the two beds which are right up against the house wall though, facing south-ish, as it's been drier than usual.
