PRUNING JAPANESE MEDLAR AKA LOQUAT

Hiya,
I have two standard loquat trees growing in my garden. They were grown from pips and are now about 1.2m tall.
They have not begun flowering or fruiting as yet.
Up to now I've been pruning them in July with no adverse consequences.
All the literature I've consulted says that winter is the best time to prune them.
Will my current regime do any damage?
Cheers.

Hi, it would be better to prune them in the late winter or early spring. The main reason is they are dormant then. A reason not to do them in June is you knock back their growth so much and in some species the sap will ooze if you prune to heavily (although I don't know specifically about loquat).
These are generally considered a plant that you shouldn't really prune unless necessary as you risk spoiling the shape but I don't think a little lite prunning will cause any harm. I have one thats a few years old now and grown from a cutting and they seem pretty hardy.

I have one that I planted last year, it's about 2ft tall now. From what I read I thought they were meant to put on blossom in late autumn/early winter and this was a reason for them being unreliable fruiters? Most of the foliage on mine looks tatty like something gets at it.

Will this fruit in the UK ? I have grown two from pips and they are only 1 foot tall.
