Plant with black spots

Hello good gardening people,

could anyone help me identify (a) what type of plant this is and (b) what's going wrong? Has some kind of spotty disease ... Plant has a lovely lemon smell!

I think the plant may be a choisya - if the flowers had a lemony smell that makes it more likely as the common name is Mexican Orange Blossom.

The black stuff is sooty mould caused by insect droppings (probably last year) on the leaves which has gone mouldy.
Often the cause is scale insects.
They may still be there or they may not, so worth checking.
Rain will eventually wash it away.

I agree. Often, crowding and poor airflow can be a big factor, which makes plants more vulnerable to other problems.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
