Seedling ID

RBMancRBManc Posts: 59
Hello,

I have a strange seedling which has popped up from a packet of Salvia Blue Victoria.

I've tried using Google Lens and plant ID apps but they are bringing up quite a range, from chilli/pepper to some kind of nightshade. Hopefully you good people on here might be able to give a more concrete ID.

The flowers look like some sort of Solanum

@Pete.8 Google Lens suggested Solanum aethiopicum, I've never heard of it and not sure how common it is to grow but looking again at the photos of it I think you may be right!

I think it's solanum nigrum, black nightshade

    A bit more info here

The solanum family is vast so there are lots of things it could be - some of them are good to eat - tomatoes, aubergines etc others are very toxic - e.g. Deadly Nightshade etc.

If you're intrigued, pot it up and grow it on and see what happens, but be aware it may be toxic if you have children about.

Thank you, definitely looks like it's not something I want to keep as we have cats around and my sisters inquisitive dog visiting. Shame, because it's growing well, but I think it'll end up in the bin!

Curiosity would make me keep it just to see ,but I agree with the others ,wear gloves when you touch it just in case .
