Underplanting trees for late spring/summer colour

KmehKmeh Posts: 173
Hello

Any suggestions for underplanting trees for summer colour. I have crocus and alliums for early spring, but looking for a perrenial to flower afterwards. I've tried erigeron, but our soil is too heavy or they've been eaten by rabbits.

Thank you

@Kmeh The problem is as the deciduous tree canopy develops and becomes more dense, light conditions change. That is why plants like crocus and alliums flower early in the season. My thoughts would be to aim for different leaf colour and texture. Erigeron is far more suited to a sunny spot.

I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

here's a link to the RHS site. If you are prepared to water you could find some flowers that like shade like fuchsia.

    Thank you!

The trees are still relatively new, so not giving any canopy yet and probably not for a few years to come.

Perhaps the better question would be, for heavy soils what summer flowers would thrive in sun and dappled shade in a few years time?

Most alliums are summer flowering, so I'm interested in which ones you have. I used to have a small white one which was earlier, but they tend to be few and far between.

Plenty will grow in heavier soil and shade, but don't forget that your soil may become drier as the tree establishes more.  :)
    What room is there?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
