Meyer Lemon Repotting

Hoping this is a simple question for the experts!  My potted lemon tree needs new pot and I am wondering if the new pot needs to be deeper as well as wider.  Should I trim the roots?  It's an older tree and has been in the current pot for at least 4-5 years.  Thank you in advance!  Lynn

If the top growth is happy then there should be no need to trim the roots.  Meyer Lemon is probably about the hardiest lemon for our UK climate.
Take it out of the pot, check the rootball size and repot in the correct medium and allow at least a couple of inches of compost at the base and round the sides. If the tree is happy, you may well have to do this every couple of years.
Without any idea of the size of the plant or the current pot, it's impossible to really advise properly.
  • It's big, in an 18 inch deep pot and I've had it for years.  Produces 3-4 dozen fruits each year but the leaves are yellowing this spring and I know it needs a soil refresh.  Thinking it needs the larger pot as well.  Thank you for responding.

Give it a wider, deeper pot as @philippasmith2 says and some good compost.  I would choose ericaceous John Innes no 3 and I would also water it with a solution of Epsom salts - 15ml of salts diluted in 5 litres of water - as this helps fix magnesium deficiency which can cause yellowing of the leaves.

Give it liquid nitrogen feeds for foliage thru the summer and then switch to one for citrus plants and higher in P and K for the autumn and winter months.
