Thanks to all for the advice. It's the first time I have used this forum and I will definitely be using it again!! I think I will just exercise all the patience I can for another few weeks! And I'm going to experiment with different seedling composts, as well as recycling old compost for seedlings Thanks
It can be hit and miss even with a perfect set of conditions @andrew.g.dallastBmRvLpF so it's always good to be aware of that. I'm sure there isn't anyone here who's had problems germinating seed at some point, regardless of the plant. I did a bit of trialling this year as I'd decided to buy less compost than I normally would. I always do sweet peas from seed, and they need a lot of food and water when in pots, so it's quite difficult to have enough of everything for them without buying any. Germinating them is usually very easy, regardless of what I use, but I did some in a compost I'd used before and they've been quite poor. The weather hasn't helped this year, as I've had to keep more of them in the growhouse [usually start them all in the house] and they've been slower, but the compost definitely hasn't helped. I'll just be using garden soil and grit in future, or the contents of their pots from the previous year, which I often do anyway. If I buy anything it'll be manure/soil instead, although I've also been collecting molehill soil which has been very useful
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Most of mine also have not grown. I am inclined to put it down to poor quality compost in my case perhaps.
BTW - you've joined the forum with a big bang with your name andrew.g.dallastBmRvLpF and the fancy word I've never heard cotyledon
