planting sprouted potatoes

I assume I can plant this if I want to (it's one of last years potato crop, not a supermarket one) along with a few friends? Should I chop off any of the sprout?!?

You can try it ,nothing to lose .I would take off the big sprout and grow the smaller one pointing upwards .
  • I was once told by a bloke who was very experienced with growing spuds that, with some varieties, after removing excess shoots you should keep them for 24 hours before planting to give the wound time to sort of ‘scab over’.  Otherwise the open wound can provide a route for diseases, which would be no good.

I don’t know which varieties and can’t comment on its veracity.

  • @REMF33. I just read that last one and it sounds awfully hostile !  I’m really sorry about that, it really wasn’t meant to be 😔  I was in a hurry and meant no offence.

With long sprouts, you can just dig a trench and lay it down. The shoots will turn upwards of their own accord. Gently cover over with soil to avoid breaking anything.

Remember, the end(s) of the shoot(s) produce the foliage eventually, so I'd leave them intact?

    I too would leave them
intact … particularly on such a small potato with a limited store of energy for growing more.

There are some bigger potatoes than this. (This was just an example :o ) I will choose the best ones if i do plant them, but will leave intact as you suggest.
They were a bit floury hence me not eating them all but I suspect that was growing conditions so might be worth giving them another go (or not!)

    Thanks all!

@Winston_The_Gravity_Man I was a little shocked when I saw your first post, I have to say! Relieved it was not intended to be rude :) I am afraid it's much more mundane - my initials.
