Crab Apple Pruning

Is it possible to prune an established Crab Apple Tree which has exceeded its alotted space? There seem to be very different views on this. I don’t want to take it out but it now hangs over my vegetable raised beds shedding loads of apples far and wide. I don’t remember the name but it may be Garnet? Thank you.
