Avacado

Hi all. To those of you who know Avacados..

I’m excited and nervous! At what point do I need to move this little beauty to a pot with compost?
I will be so sad if I kill her off.
Her roots are huge! I put the stone elevated above water last spring and she grew the roots all winter and has now just sprouted these leaves as spring has started 🥰

The difference of the two pictures is a few days. She’s growing fast.

Thanks 😊

They do grow very fast. If it were me I'd pot it up in compost now. The root system looks very strong already.

I'd get that potted up but you may need to trim the roots a bit. It could just be the photo but the leaves look a wee bit pale so she'll thank you for getting her into a suitable growing medium. Keep the compost a bit damp to begin with ( but don't overdo it ) so that the roots will not be too shocked at the sudden change from water to soil.
They do make nice houseplants but if you are in the UK, you are unlikely to get them to fruit so I assume you are just growing them as a tender decorative plant.
Altho your method is one often suggested for Avocados, if you have a compost bin/heap and you chuck your stones in there one year, you will often find the stones will sprout come the next year and then you can just pot up and grow on.  Best of luck with her :)
  • Thanks @msqingxiao I felt that she needed it but I have read a lot about people keeping them in water only for a long time.

@philippasmith2 thanks for the advice. It was more of a challenge and an experience for me. Although fruit would be amazing I’ve read it can take up to 10 years for them to give fruit 😮
I love plants so I’m quite happy to have her as a house plant. Although I’ve been talking about having a green house for attempting other fruit and veg so, if I do get one I may move her there to see what she does. Providing she survives up to that point 🤞🏻 🤞🏻

@dhawksworth1201 Yes, nothing quite like a challenge is there ?  Hope you get your GH and enjoy growing other stuff - can be addictive tho so be warned  ;)
