Yellow leaves - diagnosis of problem
in Fruit & veg
Hello everyone,
I wondered if anyone could please help me, I live in the South of France near Narbonne and have recently purchased and planted a Mirabelle tree. As you can see from the attached photos, I have some yellowing of leaves all over the plant. From Google searches, I see that this could be caused by overwatering, underwatering or too little soil nutrient content.
I doubt it is the latter as I planted the roots in good quality compost two months ago. I think it unlikely that all the nutrients from the compost have been used, but then again I'm not an expert on these matters; hence my request for help!
I have performed a "screwdriver" test to check the moisture of the soil at depth and all seems ok. However, it may be that I am overwatering the tree.
The photos seem to show that the yellow leaves are healthy....just yellow. On closer examination it seems that the leaves are turning yellow from the middle(stem) outwards. There are no signs of any pests.
I would appreciate any comments and wish to thank you in advance.

This happens in alkaline soil or with alkaline water. The calcium locks up iron and lagnesium and makes them unavailable to susceptible plants.
You can fix the iron deficiency by watering with a solution of liquid feed for ericaceous plants. Check the label for magnesium content and, if absent, water on a soluton of 15ml of Epsom salts dissolved in 5 litres of water.
Your soil does look very dry and the tree seems to be planted close to a wall which will also soak up water so don't be afraid to water but make sure you add some feed occasionally and maybe mulch it after a good rainfall to help retain moisture and support beneficial organisms in the soil.
