Are these potatoes okay?

Just returned from a weeks holiday and my potatoes are like this. They were very dry. Turning brown and wilted. Is it just lack of water or something else? Leaves in another sack are very wilted too.

Are they outside? If so they could have got nipped by frost. I think they'll be OK, particularly if you earth up/add more compost to cover the green shoots at the base before there's another chilly night.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Okay thanks will do that.  I'm in Scotland so we would have had some chilly nights when we were away and more to come!!

Yes frost damage I'm afraid,  get them earthed up,  cover with fleece  if more frost is forecast.  I  am in the South  and have only just planted mine, for exactly this reason.

Thanks Allotment Boy.  Do you think it best to keep in greenhouse for now? I prob planted too early.

During this cold spell all of mine that were showing shoots went in the greenhouse and were covered with fleece.

And the same again tonight probably 👍
  • I've had tops nipped off by frost but they recovered and were fine - definitely cover them with fleece if you haven't got room to earth over

Thanks all. Earthed over and fleeced tonight. Too heavy now to lift into greenhouse.
