@Plantminded, they do look rather splendid like that. If they were the correct orange originally, maybe it's the disease called 'tulip fire'? Not sure what the correct name is for that but apparently it occurs when tulips are grown in the same patch for years. I believe Sarah Raven's garden suffered with it several years ago and she had to dig up and bin all her tulips and let the land lie fallow.
No, it isn't Tulip fire. It is a virus and it used to be encouraged by breeders, but now you are not allowed to sell infected bulbs. They do end up having very spectacular flowers though. I have had Ballerina in the ground for about 5 years, still going strong, but no spectacular changes.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
I bought mine from Farmer Gracy, a reputable seller, so it was probably unintentional. Also, the first year they were exactly as described. I’m curious how they will turn up next year.
Thank you @Lizzie27, I rather like it too! I can’t be sure whether it’s an older one I planted in 2021 or one of the new ones I added in November last year. They were bought from reputable suppliers, Bloms and Crocus.
I've got the original orange Ballerina tulips and absolutely love them. They've been in the ground for about three years now and still look good. Added some more last year. Sensational with purple tulips nearby.
I agree with you @Lizzie27, I’ve got some purple lily flowered tulips in my mix which have just opened their flowers today with the Ballerinas, a delight!
Very nice combo @pitter-patter. Purple and orange is a favourite mix of mine, although I like my purple a bit darker Just a thought on that - have you tried Ronaldo? I was quite surprised that I had a few showing again this year, which makes about the 4th year in a row. @Dovefromabove said recently, on another thread, that they're very reliable though, so I intend getting more of those.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
