Dividing thalictrum?

Assuming that 1) you divide thalictrum (never done it) and 2) that this is a thalictrum (probably in the wrong spot too close to the hedge... if it is the "lost" Black Stockings I planted (planted two, forgot where I put one), I don't think it flowered last year, but it has buds on it now)

... is it too late to try to divide this now?

Thank you.

I would say yes.  Doing it this late in its progress risks checking growth and losing the flowers and you'll need to water it all summer.

I've only ever divided mine in autumn as it was almost done and dying back for winter hibernation.   The soil is then still warm enough for the roots to recover and settle in before they need to do the big spring push of fresh stems, foliage and flowers.

I agree. Too much growth on them now to be sure of a successful move. Leave it until autumn.

Thank you, both. I was afraid it was too late- but then I am just happy and surprised this survived the drought as it disappeared altogether last year late summerish. Only about half of my other thalictrums seem to have survived.

I'll split it in autumn provided it doesn't disappear on me again.

My clump is one of the earlier plants to go over and start disappearing so keep an eye on yours.

  • I am soooo envious that you can even grow it. I love Hewitts Double but my soil is too thin and gritty for it and nowhere really shady enough for it.

Why are you even thinking of dividing it.
    Large clumps look AMAZING!
