Conflicting information -- i'm confused

good morning. I have several Acers in heavy pots that I want to put in lighter, easier to move pots. On the RHS website it advises moving them in April or September. However, on another forum it states that moving them should be done in either very early Spring or Summer but not Autumn. I was planning on doing it soon but am not sure what to do now. Any advice ?? Thanks, Shazza

Are the pots roughly the same size? If you're not disturbing the rootball much then I wouldn't worry too much about it. I usually repot about now before the buds open too much just to avoid damage to the new leaves. If they're going into a bigger pot then it seems better to do it early in the year when they have time to grow the roots. Adding BF&B pellets now also helps with the new leaf growth.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

yes, the lighter pots are same size as the heavy ones which i'm either going to use elsewhere or give away. unfortunately, all of them are now in full leaf so it's probably too late ???

It's not a problem. As long as you're careful with the foliage, you're just shifting them from one pot to another.  :)
It would only be difficult if they were stuck in the pots and you have to wrangle them a bit. Even so, it should be ok. Water well before getting them out, and water afterwards to settle them in. Keep them somewhere sheltered until they're happy.
I've just re potted one of mine, about 3 weeks ago,  as @wild edges describes. Just before they started coming into bud/leaf. It's definitely the best time of year when moving them up a size, as they want to grow. Acers are only just getting going now round here.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

When the RHS talks about moving them it is in the context of some root disturbance. You will not disturb the roots at all so could do it now. Beware, lightweight pots blow over. I have to put sandbags on mine to weigh them down.

thanks Fairygirl. the leaves have only just opened so i'm keeping fingers crossed that they'll be ok. they will be  in a sheltered spot anyway because we have a lot of wind in our garden as we are very exposed. Arthur1 i'm not buying tall pots and they'll all be grouped together and weighted down inside to prevent that from happening. Thanks for all the advice.

I would mention that very young leaves are more susceptible to damage than when they are a bit more mature.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
