Lay a patio on this?!?

Hello! So I'm in the middle of a garden refurb - well, at the start actually - and I lifted up some decking that previous owner laid. The idea was to lay patio instead of decking, personal preference, but the ground looks BOGGY. I was thinking about making a french drain, as I have in the rest of the garden given the clay soil and waterlogged issues we generally get, but even digging in it is pretty much impossible. Is there any hope for laying a patio on this? Maybe laying some sub base? Or should I just give up and go with the decking?

  • Would your garden fall towards this area or away from it?
it does seem really wet also it is close to your house?
usually there is drains around the perimeter of the house (modern builds anyway) you could possibly tap into this and run your excess water through it, just a thought

Decking is soooo passée.  It is good though for sheltering rats.
