Allium roots do not branch like other plants do when cut, they just die back to the basal plate. Then the plant has to make a new root altogether. That is why if you remove the roots from a leek pant before putting in the soil you should also reduce the top growth.
@Palustris I always trim roots of leeks to about an inch or two because when you start them off in a seed bed they develop long roots that are impossible to drop in the dibbed hole in the final planting position. I never trim back the top growth and always grow good leeks. Clearly mine haven’t ever read the rules!
