Sowing in trays outside

Hi all,
Apologies if this is a silly question, but I’m quite new to growing plants from seed.
I want to add some ammi majus into my beds. I did intend on sowing them directly into the beds, but when it comes to thinning them out I think I’ll struggle to distinguish them from weeds!
Could I sow them into trays that I leave outside in a sunny spot in the garden, and then plant them into the bed so I know exactly where they are and can space them out a bit? Would they grow at the same rate as if I sowed them directly into the bed?

Thanks!

Yes you could. I would sow them into modular trays, and then plant out when they fill their module.
They might actually grow quicker than being sown direct.
How can you lie there and think of England

    I think they'd definitely grow quicker.  :)
You can also sow sparingly into pots and plant the whole thing if you prefer, removing one or two if there's too many, or just remove excess seedlings in the pot/module first. Much easier.  :)
Sowing direct really only works if the soil and conditions suit @matilda7LFGWuRu especially at this time of year.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
