Can I save this?

I have this beautiful rose in our garden but unfortunately due to an extension it has to go. Is there any way of me saving it? If I try to dig it up will it survive? It's been here for years as far as I can tell. Or can I take cuttings?
Unfortunately I do not know what type of rose it is.

  • Hello,

I had a similar dilemma a few years ago and managed to save the rose.

Dig as deep as you can get as much root as you can, I did lose some very deep bits, then get it straight into a well prepared well watered hole. I cut almost all the branches off, down very low, and astonishingly, within a few weeks I had lovely fresh growth and a great summer of flowers.

It's as big as ever now and very healthy.

    Good luck.

If you don't have a new site ready for it until after the extension is built, you could try a large pot (thinking something like 50cm or more in both depth and diameter) as a temporary home, although it's difficult to guess how big the root ball will be when you get it out. Prune the top growth down as @D0rdogne_Damsel said so that it can focus on root growth to begin with.
Edit: just noticed the paving slabs. I would lift the two in front of the rose first (and any concrete/hardcore underneath) because the rose roots are probably growing underneath them.
