Salvias no sign of life

adamadamantadamadamant Posts: 278
hi fellow gardeners, is it too early to worry about my salvias not showing any sign of life yet?  It has been a very cold winter down here in the south and it is still unseasonably cold and I wonder if I have underestimated the effect of temperature on my plants.  Amistad, Black and Blue and all my Salvia guaranticas are showing nothing so far. I only ask as I'd like to buy replacements if they are kaput, and thought I'd better do it now rather than later while supplies are plentiful.  Do they spring into life rather later than other plants?  Thanks

@adamadamant Amistad is always late to appear I dug one up years ago only to find tiny signs of life just under the soil. I wouldn't recommend you do this however as the roots go deep . Best to continue to wait. Other woody salvias have different levels of hardiness so worth checking that out.
Having said that I think there will be been many dead salvias this spring, years ago the only way to keep them was indoors over the winter.
They won't be in the GC's yet too early. Middletons on line is wonderful, 'a child in a sweet shop' comes to mind!
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Thank you I dont know Middletons, I will check them out. Always happy to find a new website!  And I didnt realise that salvias were not very hardy, until recently I only planted the bedding type ones like striata,.  At Chelsea Physic Garden they have beds and beds of them which are not lifted in the winter, but then it is a walled garden with a microclimate, and on the river to boot.  I appreciate the answer.

We are southerly here and no show on our Amistad yet.
I usually take a few cuttings but left it last year. Blow-away was full of other things.
I left all the old stems on as many experts suggest. Hoping to see some green soon, I am itching to tidy them up.

No visible signs from my Amistad yet, but I could feel some tiny soft growth around the base of one of them so I think I'll have at least one. They're ALWAYS later than I expect.
