When can I plant them out

  • I planted my cosmos out last week, completely forgetting the after first frosts rule. I bought them as seedlings from Sarah Raven and when they arrived a few weeks back, I potted them and left them in the pop up greenhouse. I took them out during the day and put them back in in the evenings until one night I forgot and they got left out. They've been outside 24 hours ever since and so far so good. Now that I've planted them in the raised beds, I'll just have to keep an eye on temperatures and hope they don't get eaten 🤞Even if I get lucky this time, I shan't risk it next year!

@februarysgirl, if you have any horticultural fleece or old net/voile curtains you could throw them over the cosmos plants when cold nights are forecast. Even large cardboard boxes upturned over them would help but you do need to take those off in the daytime because they block the light, so not as good if you have to be out to work early in the morning while it's still cold.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • @JennyJ Not entirely sure what I'll cover them with yet. I'm an early morning cleaner so even though I leave about 5:30am, I'm usually home by about 9:30 so not a problem 😊

I will try again Marigold @GunStreetGirl. I have already started again with Sneezwort, Verbena, Veronicacastrum and Yarrow.

I always buy Lobelia to have the right colour with the Marigold.

When we got the greenhouse in November 2019, that’s why I made the mistake to sow tomatoes in January :( I learned from this. But haven’t had other issues in the years before. It’s just this year that is so cold. Also, it’s the first time that I have 15 different plants sown which I have no experience with.

I’m just watching Frances from yesterday’s episode. Her garden is as big as ours. I love watching her. What a difference to the others. :)

  • I had been extremely busy from Friday afternoon, when the rain stopped, until Sunday afternoon. I potted on all around 60 plants that were in need and pricked a few. I also cleaned the greenhouse and rearranged the areas to store plants.

I wonder if the foxglove that I had grown from seeds since March and which have established quite good leaves and look healthy, if they can be planted after the frosty days have gone this week?

But one final question do I have: what night temperature need Chilli plants if they are in the greenhouse? Is around 10°C the minimum?
My plants are now 60cm if not higher and would like to move them into the greenhouse in 2 weeks time, but the temperature will then be by around 15 °C over the day and 7/8 °C over night (if we are lucky).

I wouldn't plant the foxgloves, but they could have been outside hardening off by now, even if they're only a couple of inches high.
Then when they're filling a 3 or 4 inch pot they could be planted. I don't plant out anything smaller than that at this time of year unless it's already been outside all winter - ie very hardy, which foxgloves are.  :)

I don't grow chillies, but yes - they'll need decent overnight temps, similar to tomatoes.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Many thanks @Fairygirl. I will acclimate the foxgloves
