Butternut Squash

Stupid Mistake!

I planted out my butternut squash too early, they were quite strong when they went out so i took the risk (wrongly)

leaves have now shriveled up to almost nothing, should i take off leaves and leave in the ground to come again or would it be better to dig up and resow?

    Hello @NewnorthernIrishgardener

Yes siree!   Far too early - the nights are still too cold yet - I live a lot further south than you and haven't planted anything yet!!  Some diehards here have planted tomato plants which are small - but they're not moving because it's too cold still (although we're having 19°C sunny days , the nights are chilly).

Anyway.  Can you protect them with a plastic tunnel or plastic boxes - taking the protection off for the midday temperatures only.  They might survive but they have had quite a shock.

    Maybe start again.

I’d resow. They’re not going to come to anything. You’ve got plenty of time .., I’ve not sowed my squashes yet … hopefully I’ll do it any day now.

I agree with the other posters, I think you'll be better off starting again. When plants get a big temperature shock they ' sulk' and take a long time to get going again. I live in the south east and I normally sow mine indoors around the first week of May, then plant outside in early June.

I've only just sown some but indoors. Agree with others too cold to put seedlings like squashes out. Last night in the SW it went down to 1degree.
