Has my Star Jasmine died?

We've had some Jasmin in for about 3 years now, to grow up some fencing
It has been doing well but after the winter it seems to have died

Have they died off?
Will they recover?

These are some pictures from around the bases, they have probably grown tendrils about 3 ms long now, but the ends look the same as the base

This one seems quite dry and brittle

This ones a bit more 1/2 and 1/2

And this one seems to be doing OK

Will they come back or will I need to replace some of them?

Thanks
Andy

Have you tried scraping the stem to look for life? So many plants have been hit hard this winter.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Do as @GardenerSuze suggests and check the stem.

Chances are it will still be alive as most seem to look like this after winter.

    Thanks for the quick responses!

Not 100% sure what I'm looking for, presume, soft wood, moisture, green tinge, etc...
If so then presume these 2 haven't made it as they are dry and white inside

Wheres these ones, seem soft inside and have tinges of green

For the ones that look like they have survived what's the best coarse of action to help them recover?
Should I remove all the dead leaves?
    Trim dry branches?

    Thanks

Remember the beast from the east? Well about 2 months before that hit I had some fencing work done and the workmen well and truly trampled and compressed the heavy clay soil in and around the base of the star jasmine.

The soil conditions were never ideal and, after that treatment, I thought the plant might be killed. Then we had the BFTE.

The whole plant was reduced to twigs with absolutely no sign of life.

Being the lazy mare that I am I just left the plant there and moaned a lot about it being dead. Imagine my surprise when (in June) the plant started producing tiny buds.

The moral of that story is that I wouldn't be in a rush to dispose of a star jasmine until summer is well underway and you're sure it's dead. You could give the plant which is ok a bit of a feed with BFB and remove any dead leaves but beyond that I'd just leave things a couple of months and see what happens.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
  • Yes, I wouldn't give up on it. Wait and see until next year.
  • Thanks guys, super helpful  :)
