The owners are careful to the extent of meanness.  And sentimental. I could give them one of my trained seedlings, but they would probably keep the old.

Bay roots become dense, yes.  But I would not describe them as fibrous.

Regarding the best person for the task, I toyed with the words "hearty" and  "butch"; I'm glad I didn't use either.  Even thought of "person's"; but it just didn't have the right ring.

    What the ...

On my screen it's less than 2mm.  Even if I knew what it meant, why not say it in words.

You’re on an Internet forum Bédé … it’s really not that difficult is it?  You’re intelligent and understand most social interaction.

If you ask someone a question and they shrug their shoulders you know that signifies “I don’t know” or even “I dunno” which on my phone gives me the option of this 🤷‍♀️

Didn't know that that emoty-thing was shrugging shoulders.  It's not a question of intelligence (thank you), but knowledge and eyesight.

Of course I am very familiar with:  hausser les épaules.

Added after Suze:  bédé, I am not venerable, and w/o the @, it's a name not a place.

I have to say I agree with @Bede [yes you read that correctly] didn't know what it was as it was too small for my senior citizen eyes.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

It’s @ = attention (ie drawing your attention to something you may find of interest)

    not ‘where’ 😊

as for knowledge … no one told me, I sussed it out myself … and (after some embarrassing mis-identifications) I try to remember to wear my reading glasses when using the forum 🤓

The best person for any job is the one who knows what needs doing and how to do it, is able to cope with the task in hand or if not, has the nous to ask for assistance.  SFA to do with gender as far as I know  ;)

But the main thing is ...

    No answers to my problem.

You’ve had plenty of answers bédé  … all the same … it needs potting on into a suitable growing medium and a larger pot … or planting into a suitably prepared spot in the open ground.

The fact that its owner doesn’t want to do either doesn’t mean that there is an alternative solution.

If they want to starve their tree to death that’s their choice.  :/
