Ribes - good for....nothing?

alfharris8alfharris8 Posts: 513
I inherited a flowering currant (don't know the name of the variety) but I like it.
It produces lots of seedlings but are they worthy growing on and are they true to the parent plant?
Thank you

They are worth growing on if you want more of them or have people to pass them on to. They look glorious in the spring but not so interesting the rest of the year.

The seedlings can vary. I've seen the classic pink type with various self sown plants around it in various shades of pink. I think it's the white types that are more likely to become pinker seedlings but some of these can look nice. If you want to take the natural variation or guess work out of it, they grow very easily from cuttings and that way they share the flower colour of the parent plant.

Thank you @thevictorian. They are indeed very pretty now and I like the leaves.

I used to grow a very different Ribes. R Speciosum with Fuchsia like flowers beautiful but the thorns were sharpe.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
