... and who's done THIS?

What has caused these two very regular and symmetrical holes in my lawn?

I get burrowing bees, but these must be massive. I'm sorry I didn't put something in the pic for scale, but they are about 3cm diameter and about 5-7 cm deep.  And no sign of excavated soil.

I promise I haven't done them with a stick.

Do you have a neighbour with stilts? Perhaps someone keen to join the circus?

Voles? So symmetrical?  Two together? And they don't lead anywhere.

Mini crop circles?  They look like borings the Mars rover is making on another planet.

Someone with a very small ladder? Mine gets pairs of holes if the window cleaner comes when the ground is wet and soft (which isn't often) but they're bigger, rectangular and further apart.

    High heels?
  • @bédé these holes are made by either voles or squirrels.

But how did they get there, two in splendid isolation?  And 3cm diameter?

Our squirrels aren't as neat and tidy as this.

Squirrels do that in our lawn. Maybe they were digging next to each other having a chat.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
