Tadpoles

I have been keeping half an eye on my pond, waiting to see the first frog spawn, didn't see any last year.
Yesterday I glanced at it and there are hundreds of tadpoles. The same thing happened last year.
In previous years the spawn was always laid on the surface attached to pond weed. Just in time for it to be frozen by a late frost. Now the frogs seem to be laying their eggs under water, or at least hidden. Th etaddies look as if they are about 2 weeks old.

I saw frogspawn quite early and then it disappeared and I thought that the frost had killed it.  Not so, yesterday there were loads of tadpoles swimming around happily.

Oh . Well . Maybe I’ll see some yet . I thought my spawn was frozen ,it did go white then it too disappeared. Perhaps I’ll be lucky like you folk .
  • Most interesting Joyce, I too am waiting in hope of spawn. Pond has been in situ since last July!

We had a good amount of spawn that has disappeared, not seeing tadpoles yet. There is a lot of vegetation to hide, but I wonder how much fall prey to the (many) newts.
  • All Amphibians are having a very difficult time at the mo.  Spring 2022 was very cold, the summer was very long hot and very very dry.  Many amphibians perished last year.

This spring has been cool and with so few remaining amphibians remaining after last year's difficult weather they are struggling.

I think a heron has eaten our frogs. We did have spawn but also have no tadpoles.

I have tadpoles in my new little pond already, so exciting!  The eggs appeared just days after the ice finally melted and now they are beginning to hatch.  I'm a little worried as we had about 3 inches of rain the other night and the pond overflowed into the lawn, so I may have lost some.
