Oleander looking sick

Despite covering our two standard Oleanders with fleece this winter they are both suffering from curled up, dry, brown leaves. Some leaves are partially green.  We have had a cold winter like the rest of the country, and in Essex we went down to about -8 degs on a couple of occasions. Have we lost them or will they recover? Do I need to help them in any way? Many thanks for any advice that can be offered.

Well the leaves have been killed.  Scratch the bark and see whether there is any green = life further back.  If there is, keep pruningback until only that alive is left.

I don't offer much hope.  Mine in a cold greenhouse suffered -5ºC briefly on several occasions nut came through fine.  Sap contains antifreeze, maybe -5 is the limit.

My outside baytree was covered in fleece and was singed.  Any insulation slows down temperature drop, but doesn't stop it.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

There was another thread a little while ago about Oleanders @dj.ac.jackson but I can't find the search facility at  the moment. You still have green leaves on there so I would say that just some pruning will be needed. Mine always look tatty after the winter down here in SW France.
  • Thank you @floralies and @bede. We have been out pruning them this afternoon so keeping our fingers crossed they survive.  Now weather is beginning to warm up hopefully they stand a chance. Thanks again for the advice 😊
