Yew Balls Near House

TimmyMagicTimmyMagic Posts: 135
I have some left over Yew hedging and was thinking of planting some in a small north facing plot at the front of my house, right outside the front door. These would not be grown into a hedge but over time shaped into balls.

Would this be a problem? I'm slightly concerned about the roots doing damage to the property, what with it being so close. If I keep it clipped would it be okay? Or should I choose something else?

  • They're very often grown in front of buildings, so I would imagine they don't affect the foundations or drains.

I doubt they'd be any problem. If you're clipping them into balls, they won't get huge anyway, and therefore the roots won't either  :)
We're near a small NT garden. The gatehouse has two columnar yews a few feet from the front door and walls. They were recently pruned right back, presumably as they'd lost their shape a bit, but they were around ten feet high, or more.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

It's only large roots and especially moisture demanding trees on clay soil that would be a problem.

Go ahead they will look great.

    Great, thanks everyone.

I ordered 30 for my hedge and miscalculated and only used 15 of them. So using some for the front will be ideal.
