Bare root plants - how long will they survive unplanted?

LatimerLatimer Posts: 1,068
Hi everyone

I have taken delivery of my bare root raspberries and one bare root rose. Unfortunately, I'm sick and I don't know when I'll be able to get back in the garden to plant them, (we are talking days not weeks). Do I just pop them in a bucket of water? They are currently packaged as they were delivered.

Thank you
I’ve no idea what I’m doing.

I would say raspberries will be ok in a bucket of water for a day or so but I would just heel them into a patch of soils somewhere and they will be fine until you get to them, they are robust.

Could you drop them into a pot and cover the roots with a bit of soil? They'd be OK for a week or so like that

Thanks guys, yes, that will be doable.

I'm assuming I don't need to separate out all the raspberry canes? I can just bung them all in tied up and cover over the roots?

Yes, just cover the roots with damp soil or compost.

Meant to add, sorry you aren't well, hope you get better soon. I'm not well either at the moment.
