Hardy, fragrant, evergreen climber

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on fragrant, evergreen climbers? It will be against a sunny, south facing wall. I have seen some like trachelospermum jasminoides, but I have heavy clay and in winters it can get quite wet. The spot is not exposed, but not necessarily sheltered either. So in all it would be best if it was quite hardy, if such a climber exists!

I’m in south England.

thanks

Maybe Cleamtis Armandii? It doesn't like cold winds or below -10° though. It likes a cool deep soil with its flowers in the sun.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • @Busy-Lizzie problem is I have that growing up another fence and kinda want something different. Just not sure one exists!

But it does the job you want in that aspect. Ours is superb now and the fragrance is also superb. Clematis armandii.
  • @bertrand-mabel that’s very true, I will keep it as an option. I’m also considering just having two climbers: a hardy non fragrant evergreen for covering the wall and then a deciduous fragrant one for the summer, letting them entwine as one. That would probably give me more options
  • What about a honeysuckle copper beauty? I grew it in Sheffield and it never lost a leaf although I see RHS say it can lose some in winter. I thought it was beautiful with yellow flowers and green leaves which turned coppery colour when older. Mine was on a north facing wall but this website says it will take full sun? https://www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/lonicera-henryi-copper-beauty-pbr/classid.2000018038/
  • @Shauna2021 looks beautiful, problem is the two honeysuckles I have already are very susceptible to powdery mildew and I spend the whole summer spraying them (homemade non toxic mixture) to try and prevent it, and when I forget to spray the leaves just drop. Did you have any issues with that?
  • I never had a hint of mildew on it (Ive moved house in the last year so can't tell you how it fared in the heat last year). Its leaves are more waxy feeling than what I think of as a standard honeysuckle, but I completely understand you don't want the same high maintenance situation!
  • I have heavy clay and two Trachelospermum in the ground. The one with more sun (variegated) was untouched by nearly a week at -12 degrees. The one in more shade has had the tips of its shoots frosted off. Both are still thriving. It's definitely better than C. armandii if what you are after is a green wall with lots of scent low down. C. armandii heads for the hills and flowers as high up as it can reach. Not down below...

    Yours is gorgeous @Athelas.
I would have suggested Star Jasmine but I thought @omghiomg_123 didn't want it.
