You don't mention the size of the pot of planter, but there is a wide range of possibilities from large and dramatic things like hardy palms and Schefflera, down to small trailing things. Check out Podophyllum 'Spotty Dotty', Arisaema or Paris polyphylla for some unusual foliage forms. Athyrium nipponicum var. pictum 'Ursula's Red' is a fascinating plant over a long period. Carex forms can give you an evergreen grassy feel in a pot. Providing they are not too flowery for your purposes, Polygonatum (Solomon's Seal) make wonderful foliage plants.
