Growing Medium for Container Veg

I'm having a go at growing container veg this year and I was just wondering what was best to use for the specific veg I'm trying my hand at. Google search is unfortunately proving a little inconsistent.

The veg I need advice for are:

Broccoli Green Sprouting
French dwarf beans Caledonia
Sugar snap peas Delikett
Cucumber Mini Munch

I have at hand, topsoil, peat free compost, farmyard manure and chicken manure pellets.

I grow mini munch in my greenhouse.
I use a 22L pot and fill with a mix of multi-purpose compost, farmyard manure, topsoil and perlite - roughly equal amounts of each, but a bit less than 25% perlite.

When planting, ensure where the stem comes out of the compost it's slightly raised to prevent crown rot. If the bottom of the stem remains damp all the time it can cause rot.

  • I'm using a hanging basket for the Mini Munch. I couldn't say what the volume is, only that it's 45cm wide.

    Thanks for the advice 🙂

The Mini Munch cucumbers grow to 3’ tall or 9’. have you got supports for that in hanging basket,  I don’t think they will get enough nutrients in such a small container.

I agree - there's not much space in a hanging basket for such a vigorous plant and in Summer it'll need watering several times/day.
Mine grows up to the eaves of the greenhouse then across to the other side.

  • @Lyn This is what I'm going for https://www.reddit.com/r/vegetablegardening/comments/oyu8fk/this_year_we_experimented_with_hanging_cucumbers/

The minimum depth according to one of the commenters is 8 inches and I've just double checked and the basket I have is 9 inches. Worth having a crack at I think 🙂
  • I grow dwarf French beans in my raised bed (along with other veggies like tomatoes and courgettes), and it's filled with a mix of 60% topsoil and 40% manure. I had a bounty of beans last year and will just refresh the bed with a dressing of this same mix this year.

  • @WildFlower_UK I have perennials, annuals and shrubs in my raised beds and with a couple of exceptions, all they're in is Wickes topsoil. Practically everything has grown like crazy in the stuff.
