    Liatris are great, I have been starting them off in pots and then planting out. I have used 9cm pots for single tubers and slightly larger (12cm?) for clumps of 3. Ones planted in the ground tend to disappear.

    I'd say it's getting a bit late to order tubers but you might find some. They are quite easy to slot in among other plants, they grow very upright and don't overshadow things.

    Thank you @Loxley, that's very helpful.  I placed an order yesterday and will start them off in pots.  They look great with your grasses!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

    @Silver surfer Thank you.
    Good to know as that would be an ideal size for what I'd like.

    My Deutzia "Mont Rose" also gets to about 1.5m, on sandy well-drained soil, rainfall on the low side.

    Thanks @JennyJ
    Do you have yours in a sheltered position or does it cope with a bit of exposure?

    It used to be by the front gate, reasonably exposed as suburban situations go but not halfway up a mountain or anything like that. A couple of years ago I moved it to a spot in front of next-door's new fence, facing south-west and near a tree so more sheltered. It took a while to settle in, I think because of dry summers and proximity of the tree as much as anything else, but seems fine now.

    @LToby - thank you.
    Your Deutzia looks very pretty. I had wanted one for a while and spotted a nice looking specimen at the garden centre last week.
    Now debating where to put it and the photos are helpful.
