Climbing rose - planting distance? training? recommendation?

Hello All,

I am wanting to plant a climbing rose to go up the side of the window and then around the top of the window. I have read that the rose will need to be "trained", how exactly is this done? Do I need a trellis up the side and along the top of the window? is wire or something less visible possible?

How far away from the house should a climbing rose be planted?

Finally and suggestions on a suitable climbing rose for this the position is south facing so full sun, as much as possible for the UK!

Many thanks in advance!

Most climbers are best planted around a foot to 18 inches from house walls, and yes- you'll need supports for it - wires, trellis or similar, and then you'll have to tie stems in if you want it trained around windows.

However, this thread is the one to post on, or look at for help. Lots of keen rose growers on it, and knowledgeable folk who will be able to advise you   :)
