Our buddleia don't normally completely lose their leaves here and it was the same this winter where we had it down to about -8c. We also see new growth all over the plant at the same time, not just at the base, so it does sound like the top growth has died off and it's starting to regrow lower down. We do quite commonly get the odd branch die off but never all of them, so I think the cold must have got to them.
I appreciate all the comments, even the snooty one: you know who you are-biddy was it? (what a hoot). I guy who doesn't knit knows when he is an unwelcome "ugly" American. "Soil" in these parts is a verb. As maybe Churchill said (paraphrasing here):Two countries separated by a common language. In any case, I have a plan for these plants now. Enjoy (or not) the coronation and I hope Harry and spouse attend and then stay. Cheerio (a cereal over here).
I wondered if you were across the pond @obecalp, due to use of the word dirt, but it should make no difference to advice offered - everyone should know what you were meaning My only concern was that, although I said the December weather shouldn't have affected it, your weather could be much harsher than here, so I should have asked. However, the fact that you had new growth on them at the base meant they were still alive, as @Dovefromabove mentioned, so the advice was still fine. Hopefully they'll come away well for you over the next few months
Are you trying to offload those two on us? We might fall out with you now!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
