Climbing rose on fence

LatimerLatimer Posts: 1,068
Hi all

I’m considering a climbing rose to go around the opening in this fence (blue arrow). Where the red arrows are I have clematis growing, so thought a nice rose would look good.

Can anyone recommend something suitable? Colour wise I think either white or pale pink and as it’s close to a seating area I think something scented would be good.

A quick scan of David Austin suggests “Claire Austin” or “The Generous Gardener”

This side of the fence is W facing (roughly)
I’ve no idea what I’m doing.

I grew the Generous Gardener in my last garden on a trellis fence that faced east and west and separated my veggies from the ornamental garden.  I loved it - sturdy, lots of flowers, soft pink colour and perfume too.  I reckon it will cover 3 of your fence panels once established and trained horizontally or diagonally but that's OK as the clematis can scramble up and through it when it invades their space.

    Don't know Claire Austin.

Perfect @Obelixx that sounds great. The photos of it do look amazing.

My daughter had The Generous Gardener and loved it. I've heard that the flowers on Clare Austin can be rather droopy.

Love your picnic table with the brolly and general layout.

Sorry not to have a helpful comment but the only climbing Austins I have are the wrong colour (Bathsheba), discontinued (Tess) or unscented (Albrighton.... I would recommend that one otherwise).

Otherwise there are lots of scented pink and white climbers by other breeders (Giardina, Boule de Neige etc) you might look at.

    Thank you @WAMS 😊

When it comes to roses I’ve only heard of David Austin, so I’ll take a look at some of those also, many thanks

  • I grow both of the David Austin roses you mention.  Of the two I think that Generous Gardener is the better performer...lots of vigour, lovely scent and beautiful flowers.  Claire Austin is also good but does not flower as freely for me.

    Thanks @parrotfeather*

After some more looking around I decided to go with the Generous Gardener. 3 positive recommendations can’t be ignored!
