Euphorbia - have I killed it!

hi. I had a huge plant (Euphorbia I assume) at the bottom of my garden. It’s been really healthy and I haven’t had to do anything with it for the last year and a half since we moved in and it’s just been quite happy. But this is now what’s happened! I assume it’s dead? Any ideas why? (I attach before and after photos)

Some of them aren't very hardy, I have several like that. You can cut it back to base and you might get new growth from the base

    Is it a euphorbia?

Looks like Euphorbia mellifera? Ours looked like that a few winters ago. Cut it down to the base and it re-shooted, took a while to really get going again but is fine now

  • I lost several Euphorbias in pots this last winter and they will not shoot from the base but anything still in the ground may do so in time.

I think it is a Euphorbia Mellifera or at least that's what Google photos identifies it as.  That's encouraging to know it may grow back so I'll chop it down to the base - so annoying though as it was a huge bush. Thanks for all your advice.
