Clematis montana rubens

  • I have now noticed alot of new growth from the base so would it be wise to cut off all the rest now were into spring ?

    I wouldn't do anything to it just now. New growth may also appear further up. You can prune it later in the year if nothing comes away higher up. 
    Remember that they flower on the old wood, so it's likely that you'll get some growth - just a bit later than normal. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
