Globe artichokes

I have 6-7 plants grown since last year, with no visible growth. When do new shoots usually reappear?

Mine shoots within weeks of pruning to the ground.  I usually  do this early autumn
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Think, I need to order more seeds :#
It's been awfully cold here in December. I'll mulch better my next lot for the winter

If they get a chance to mature, they will develop really deep taproots  which will make them much more hardy.
Mine is well over ten years old and has survived drought, frost and ant farms.
I grow mine as an ornamental  as I  love  the flowers and foliage.

We have grown globes for many years and for the chokes. This year they have been hit by the frost after frost and so sowed some new seeds. They have germinated and in the polytunnel to harden off. BUT the older plants haven't given up and showing new growths. We will have globes to harvest this year. Love them.
  • My established plants did sprout immediately after they were cut back in the autumn but the growth didn't survive the cold spell. Most of them are just beginning to show now though but I think I might have lost a couple.
  • Mine are about 2ft tall now with the new growth. They are mature clumps and in a fairly sheltered position but I did not protect them with anything, except grass and weeds.
  • I'm hoping there is a little life still left in them. Last year they grew very well and I managed to harvest quite a few heads in August/ September but I sowed seeds in early February.
  • I think it depends where you are but I have lost Artichokes here in the Midlands in cold wet winters before.  I grow them in sandy soil next to a south-facing fence but even so they do not always reappear.  As has been mentioned, they are hardier once they reach a certain size and will then grow from the roots even if they look dead. I thnk the wet is worse for them than the cold so you could try some sort of cloche or shelter but they would rot without access to air around them. Joyce Goldenlily's covering with weeds seems to work...perhaps some dry leaves or fern stalks?
