@Latimer I was admiring your gardener earlier, beautiful. I think what you suggest is a good idea. That part of your border is important as it is very much in the centre as far as your photo shows. Time to treat yourself to something new maybe?
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
I have an Acer Bloodgood that I picked up last year that it think could look great there, however it’s still pretty small and will take a while to get to a significant size (I think). Maybe I do treat myself to something that could get moved once the Acer is a bit bigger? Any suggestions?
@Latimer I don't grow Acer Bloodgood a beautiful small tree but does it scorch in full sun? Think it will have different needs to the Oleander. Just seen a photo of your border on another thread. Last year I planted a multi stemmed Amelanchier in a similair size border, I plan to keep it pruned as they can get big. I looked for one at the GC that could be shaped to form three evenly spread stems and it is doing well. Much cheaper if you prune your own to shape. The fact that the Oleander has survived makes me wonder if you could try something else that maybe wouldn't thrive as far North as me? I like that your your Oleander is off centre, nothing looks more unnatural than planting right in the middle. You seen to have some grasses? Tall plants suit a smallish space too.

You’re right @GardenerSuze, I didn’t consider that about the Acer, that is quite a sunny spot!
I’ve had my eye on an Amelanchier before though I’m not sure I’m confident enough to try to prune something to shape! I definitely need more height, especially in this bed, it’s been frustratingly one dimensional even though I like the plants I have in there. It needs more height and more foliage at ground level. Too much of what I have is wispy and see through. For the tree I’m thinking maybe a multistem Himalayan Birch?
