Houseplant compost mix

CraighBCraighB Posts: 758
Hi guys,

I have some houseplants that need potting on and I'm not sure what kind of compost to.

So one of them is a Swiss cheese plant and the other is an Areca palm.

Do I use 50:50 regular potting compost and John innes number 2 with some grit or perlite? Or just regular potting compost on its own?

Thanks
Craigh

I usually use Westland houseplant potting mixes. There are various blends based on type of plant.  One of my supposedly difficult plants, a fiddle leafed fig, is now in its second repotting using the Westland general mix which has encouraged excellent growth.  I've also used a 50:50 mix of MPC and John Innes no 3 with perlite for one of my palms which seems to be quite happy.

In my opinion, it's all about drainage. Research your plant, and adjust to suit.
JI2 and Perlite at 2:1 is pretty good for most houseplants.

    Thanks for the advice :)

I think I might start off with the Westland houseplant compost for now and add extra grit or perlite if it needs good drainage.
