What do you really think of peat free compost?

Some plants could be potted on into soil based Levingtons, back in the early 1950's and 60's I don't think you could buy bags of compost, my Dad made his own. We don't like change that's the thing, but if compost is produced without getting it hot enough to kills most weed seeds and offer some sterilisation, the problems you speak of will continue.

I bought peat free organic compost Supagrow from Home base. Some bags have a nasty chemical/antiseptic smell; so have used that to mulch the trees rather than for potting plants. Other brands are terribly expensive 😔

And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

It's likely that the flies (fungus gnats) just arrived.
They're around throughout the year and will soon sniff out some moist compost.
I get them in my propagator every year shortly after sowing seed. They're a nuisance but don't seem to do any noticeable damage.
I also get them around houseplants sometimes at any time of year

Thanks @Pete.8 that explains it then. They don't seem to do any damage as you say but they get me a b$$%"*ing from she who must be obeyed  :D whos threating to ban my plants from the house. "Happy Wife , Happy Life" I'll have to construct a "cunning plan" to soothe her.  :D
Try chocolate. That always works with my wife. That, and preparing a meal - or even better, taking her out for a meal.

Melcourt Sylvagrow is only £8.50 a bag, well worth it, it's like beautiful woodland humus.

PS if it's not available near you, get on to your local GC about it - not me!  :p

It's also worth considering where the basic medium for many  of the bought composts come from these days.
You only have to look in some of the Green Waste bins ( roadside collections and recycling centres ) to see what people put in there.
Whilst I agree that producers/suppliers need to look to providing a decent and useable product, it would probably help in the long run if the general public also took some responsibility with regard to what is acceptable Green Waste and what isn't.
  • Can you still buy peat based compost?  I've not seen any locally (to me, in the south) for ages.

Interesting, I'll have to look it up!  Thanks for that!
Edited to say that you can actually get it on Amazon.  There is also a stockist in Southern England about 40 minutes drive away from me.

  • @The Bird Lady Where might that stockist be, please?

Homebase own brand is currently £15 for 150ltrs. That’s only £3 more than the Supagrow. I’ve used 20+ bags in the last couple of years and had no problems.
