Planter depth and width

alan544alan544 Posts: 36
I'm doing a bit of DIY and going to make a corner seating area. Behind that along one wall I'm going to make a long planter so I can have grasses and maybe a few flowering plants behind the seating area. My plan for the size is 240cm (length) x 25cm (width) x 40cm (but possibly 30cm) depth.

Before I go ahead and make this, I just wanted to make sure the width and depth are okay. I've checked against my dad's small planter where he has some Verbena in a similar width/depth and they grow nicely.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I think that 25 cm width is enough for small annuals, or herbs. You don't want people's backs against a prickly or overhanging plant but herbs should do well and smell nice. If this planter gets some sun even better. Post a photo when you are done. :)

As well as annuals and herbs, your dimensions will possibly suit small grasses which will make an impact close up. Giving your plants more root space will make drought over summer less of a problem and provide more root protection over winter. If you can increase the width and depth a bit you'll find a wider range of plants to grow.

I have a medium sized grass called Carex Red Rooster growing in a pot which is 40cm wide and 40cm deep.  It's now about 60cm tall.   This photo may help you judge your dimensions:
