Why so little Crown Prince available this year?

I'm used to be able to pick up seed from garden centres and online seed merchants, and plants in garden centres. There seems to be very little of it available this year. I'm curious as to why - any ideas?

I just found some for sale within 10 seconds, another vendor says none due to high demand.
Hopefully this answers your very basic question.

There’s quite a few places stocking them.
If you put Crown Prince seeds in the google box,   Quite a few places have them still.

Yes, maybe lots of people have just cottoned on to just how good it is, though that wouldn't explain why garden centres seem to have been not stocking the seed, rather than selling out...

Probably they’ve sold out and don’t want to restock,  most people have bought their seeds long before now.

  • ...this lack is something I've noticed since I started browsing in midwinter...

It may be that the crop was reduced last year due to the extreme drought … squash need a lot of water.

Certainly the East Anglian pumpkin fields we know looked to have a much reduced crop to those we see most years.
