Amazing @steephill...you've seen one too ( plus the added bonus of the RA butterfly) as I've not even known of their existence before today. Will definitely be keeping my eyes open for more of them. I have another Rowan tree in the garden, will keep a watchful eye on there too.

We get lots during the summer, fascinating little creatures. They seem to follow me round the garden, hovering in one spot just out of reach as if stalking me like some sort of psycho insect Robin.

The ones we saw today @steephill were acting almost as if they asleep. They never moved all afternoon from their position and didn't bat an eyelid even when we were up close and personal trying to take their pictures! I hope they don't start following me around the garden, or hover too close, I get very fidgety when insects are nearby😬

I've noticed a couple over the last week as well. Can't say I recall seeing them much in the past. Always nice to see something new
  • I saw one for the first time ever, in my garden about two days ago - it was on the path and I very nearly trod on it.  Strange that they're being seen this year by so many!   :)

Snap @The Bird Lady and @borgadr! Maybe conditions are just right in many places for the emergence? They are almost like bees in disguise🙂

I saw a bee fly in my garden today. Without this thread, I wouldn't have noticed the difference. But the proboscis was quite distinct.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

We don't get them here unfortunately, though other parts of Scotland do - mainly coastal and more southern parts. Clyde Valley is also a good place for them apparently, but we're just in the bit in between all of those.
Would be nice to have them in the garden  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

@Eustace, you are spot on about their proboscis and from a certain angle the fly looks like a streamlined aeroplane to me.
@Fairygirl, I've never seen them in the North East here in all the years I've lived here, so you never know, some may just turn up on your doorstep now👍😀 Ours seem to have disappeared now. Came in for a rest and have zoomed off again somewhere..

    It's a possibility - I'll just have to wait and see  :)
