Hinnonmaki Yellow

If any of you have experience of Hinnonmaki Yellow gooseberries, can anyone give me an idea as to the expected crop size, per bush, for the first year please.
In my absence, my wife has been out and bought some pot plants today.
Thank you

We planted 3 Hinnonmaki (Red, yellow and green) two years ago and have gotten no fruit so far. The bushes themselves have hardly grown, but are healthy. Perhaps patience is needed with that particular variety, compared to others.

We had H. Yellow some years ago … they took a couple of years to get going, but after that we had loads of fruit each year … this is also the experience of a family member to whom we gave a couple of bushes.
If I were growing gooseberries again I would choose the same variety … however they do take up a fair bit of space once they get going … they’ve quite a sprawling style of growth, so give them plenty of room … probably 1m x 1m once they’re 4 or 5 years old

  • Thank you. Varied responses. I guess I'll have to wait and see what occurs with ours. I'll tend to it, talk to it, and provide encouraging remarks!! :)

I have a Hinnomaki yellow planted ten years ago and I don't think that it produced much if anything in the first season, once the bush got going it produces loads of fruit but I have to protect it from the blackbirds or they would eat or damage most of the berries. Last year it had loads of berries but I should have thinned them out for bigger berries. The taste is brilliant if the weather is hot and sunny in June not so sweet if June is dull and cool, the bush is in full sun.
  • Ours will be in part sun - which is where are previous gooseberry bushes went, but came out last summer.

They produced well, for 15 years, then started to diminish. Last year they came out, but due to health issues, I didn't get round to purchasing new bushes in the autumn.

My wife loves gooseberries, and we have happily shared them with the birds. I'd rather lose some, than see birds stuck in netting. There ought to be enough for us all.
  • I should have said that we had Invicta variety before, as well as the Hinnonmaki Red.

I surrounded our H. Yellow bushes with those pretty windmills you can buy at the seaside … they seemed to work well enough to keep the blackbirds from sneaking too many berries. 👍

I covered mine in cheap netting from aldi but the blackbirds pecked through it and got the berries so now they are covered by a wooden frame covered with chicken wire.
