We keep getting these in the garden, what are they?

    Only seem to appear when it rains

    Probably leather jackets that live in your lawn or pots and leave when the soil gets too wet. They do travel about looking for better food sometimes though. Some people don't like them but they're a great food source for the birds both as grubs and as the adult craneflies.
    If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
