Ideas for sunny border

Hello!
We moved into our house last June, and so had left the garden last year to see what we had before doing anything to it!
So I have recently started to clear a border at the back of the garden - I have so far taken out a very very large hebe (you can see where it had grown out over lawn),  found a whole lot of stone under there and plan to take out the conifers too. So I'll be left with a blank canvas.
I'd be really appreciative on any tips/ideas for planting. Pref pollinator /cat friendly! Pictures below.

I would start off by adding some soil conditioner (well rotted manure or something similar) as l suspect the soil will be impoverished due to the conifers.
What sort of plants are you thinking of (perennials, annuals ?), and any particular colour scheme in mind ?
  • That's a good idea about improving the soil, thankyou! I'd like some shrubs for evergreen qualities so not boring to look at in the winter. I'm currently growing some annuals from seed  zinnias and verbena - might also grow some cosmos as I've had success with those in the past. Colour schemes I have not thought about honestly, I always go for colour and brightness with my pots from when I was renting. I like the jewelled look in the garden! And honestly I'm not organised/willpowered enough to only have certain colours haha!

Off the top of my head (at this hour of the morning),  possibly Euonymus or Osmanthus. I'm sure others will have plenty of ideas  :)
Go with as much colour as you can - l do !

Whereabouts are you located [roughly] @victoria_cowley?
That's important when it comes to choosing - your climate and conditions are a big factor. What works in Southend won't work in Sutherland.  It also look like quite an exposed site and that also has an impact    :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

@victoria_cowley  It does look like a very open site is it very windy?
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • We're just north of Manchester. There's always a bit of a breeze, but there is a solid fence panel behind the conifers, which will stay. In the winter because we are up fairly high it can get very cold. But on the plus side (sometimes) because so near to Manchester lots and lots of rain!
